Methodology — How the daily colors are calculated

Last updated: October 27, 2026

This page explains, step by step, how the daily color groups are produced. We want the method to be transparent so you can trust what you see and understand its limits.

The system is based on the traditional Chinese sexagenary (60-day) calendar and the Five Elements (Wu Xing). It is a cultural framework, not a scientific measurement.

1. The daily element

Each day in the traditional sexagenary calendar is assigned a “heavenly stem” (天干). Every stem corresponds to one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water.

So the first step is simply: which element rules today? That element becomes the anchor for everything below.

2. Two relationships between elements

The Five Elements interact through two cycles:

Generating (生): Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. Each element creates the next.

Controlling (克): Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood. Each element restrains another.

These two cycles are the whole engine. Every color group below is just one of these relationships applied to today’s element.

3. The five color groups

Best (Noble Person): the element that generates today’s element — it supports you. Wear it as your lead color.

Good (Harmony): the same element as today — easy, balanced, cooperative.

Boost (Wealth): the element today controls — associated with attracting fortune.

Low energy (Draining): the element today generates — it spends your energy, so use it as an accent.

Skip today (Avoid): the element that controls today — best kept minimal as the main piece.

4. Where the colors come from

Each element is associated with a family of shades drawn from traditional Five Elements color symbolism (for example Wood → greens and teals, Fire → reds and pinks). We list a few example shades per group so you have something concrete to reach for.

The example shades are our editorial interpretation for everyday wardrobes; they are not a fixed canonical list.
